Taking an afternoon trip across Hoover Reservoir wasn’t a fool’s chore for this pair of young kayakers who braved chill winds and choppy waters for their first outdoor adventure of the spring.

Despite temperatures barely above freezing and a brisk wind from the west, the pair completed one crossing with a round-about return near the bridge where they encountered headwinds that buffeted their single person kayaks just enough to make the return difficult.

Despite the hazards and cold breezes they discussed their next trip to the lake although both hoped it would be a little warmer next time.

And, the day wouldn’t be complete without an iPhone Hiopstamatic Tintype of the duo.

I don’t visit Hoover Dam often during the winter. It’s too stark and void of people.

As the weather begins to change in early spring there is a hint of color along the eastern shoreline as flower buds and leaves appear in the treeline. The grey monotone of winter begins its slow evolution to the bright colored tones of spring. And, people arrive.

One of the earliest arrivals stood for me at the center of the dam for several minutes. I’d told him that I wanted a photo of him with his hat, the red shirt, his beard, and cigarette.

The only posing I did was to ask him to raise his head slightly to keep the brim of his hat from covering part of his face. His hand in his pocket, weight on one foot, and not looking at the camera are the natural positions his body fell into. It appears natural because it is. It’s not something I arranged, suggested, or manipulated.

This photo took very little time because all the elements are natural. The posing, The light. The moment.

It’s great when so many necessary elements for a good photo happen organically. When the natural order of the elements presents themselves in a way that is pleasing and interesting.

Of course I had to shoot him the the iPhone Hipstamatic Tintype FilmPak.

Perhaps a last Spring at the Cooper Road farm

Perhaps a last Spring at the Cooper Road farm

Cooper Road Farm implements It’s been some time since I spent time at the Cooper Road farm. With today’s weather being relatively pleasant, sunny, and clear, I thought it time to add to the photo collection. Also, it might work out that Sunday will offer a contrasting photo as the weather forecast has the possibility of several inches of snow.

Development plans for most of the farmland behind the barn also means this may be the last year the acreage is farmed. Next use may be a senior retirement facility and other businesses. I’ve always known that was a possibility but the development company has made several proposals to the planning commission and I’m sure one will be approved.

Otterbein University purchased most of the remaining land on the other side of Cooper Road although it has not yet announced what the fields may be used for.

Spent about 30 minutes wandering the fields, especially the bee hives along the front of the property and the farm implements lying still in an open field.

Shot with several lenses but chose this iPhone photo shot with the 6×6 app and processed with TiltShiftGen, and Camera+.
