A sunny afternoon in Uptown

Studying in the sunlight on the sidewalk in front of Java Central

It was a sunny day that I spent most of my time inside. The only good part about being inside on such a great day is knowing that almost all of that time involved photography, either shooting, editing, or discussing.

When the time came for me to venture outside I went to Uptown Westerville where the wonderful afternoon light has a great angle and intensity. It’s also the time of day when the sidewalks are active with shoppers and diners making it a little easier to find good photos.

I prefer photos with people in them so it was obvious that a student studying on the sidewalk patio in front of Java Central would be my first choice. It’s also nice that she was the first person I saw when I got out of the car, camera in hand.

There were a few other moments of sunlight interests, spring gardening, and a collection of sun ornaments. You can see them at The Gardiner Collection.

Flowering trees along West Main Street in Uptown Westerville

Following the last two days photos of the vibrantly colored trees and flowers at Inniswood and Vine Street I again traveled to Uptown Westerville to where I knew there would be a great overhang of color if I were lucky enough to have students from Otterbein walk under the boughs.

I’d waited for about 20 minutes for someone to use the north side of the street for their travels instead of the south when this trio of students appeared to cross the sidewalk on their way to the other side. I’d seen them coming through the parking lot so I’d prefocused on the section of sidewalk where I anticipated they’d cross.

I was shooting at a relatively narrow depth of field and needed to make my focus accurate. Still, the original is slightly soft through my movement and the focus being just in front of them.

There were three seconds from the time all three appeared at the sidewalk and the moment they moved out of the composition.

Although the sun had just dipped behind a cloud and the threesome’s path wasn’t exactly where I’d hoped they’d walk, the colors and composition are still successful.

A little color on a rainy day

One of my facebook friends commented today how much she likes rainy days because the colors become so saturated and rich. I agree and often travel on rainy days just so I can find bursts of color drenched with a day’s rain.

Although it wasn’t far from home My Final Photo for the day came at the end of a bike ride when I found other photographers admiring the colors of Inniswood Gardens.

Spring colors renew spirits and signals new season of life

Jogger runs past large magnolia trees in Uptown Westerville

It’s that time of year when the colors seem more vibrant than normal. I’m of the opinion that it’s an illusion only because we’ve just left behind the dull tones of winter and any color other than a monotone gray is cause for celebration.

And celebrate, I did.

I spent the better part of an hour on a short stretch of street in Uptown Westerville watching how the light and clouds moved over a series of Japanese Magnolias at the peak of their spring blossom growth. There was little, if any, petal drop from the old trees that stood taller than their accompanying houses. In full bloom displaying the pinks and purples blossoms from their first growth of a new season their colors dominated the street.

Cars hurrying to pick up kids at school slowed, runners slowed their pace turning their heads to the fertile plumage, and dog walkers allowed their charges to slightly stray when burdened by the beauty of spring.

There were other markers of spring along and near the street. Lawns mowed in front of homes bearing the patriotic colors of flags. Bradford pears brightening the horizon with white blossoms. Collections of small red buds and white plum shrubs and trees dotting  yards. Each color marking the powerful surge of spring as the earth renews itself in a splash vibrant color.
